In general, magnesium alloys are slower to extrude compared to aluminum alloys. However, few comparisons of the actual processing limits are available. The present work generates a series of extrusion limit diagrams for a number of commercial magnesium alloys (M1, ZM21, AZ31, AZ61 and ZK60). These are compared with a common "fast extruding" aluminum alloy (AA6063). The maximum extrusion speed of the Ml alloy, whilst still avoiding cracking, is shown to be similar to AA6063. However, alloys ZK60 and AZ61 were only able to be extruded at a rate ~5 % of that of AA6063. Thus, with increasing alloying addition the relative extrudability is severely reduced.
