Accurate location of LIDAR footprints is essential to data fusion and validation activities. A complex set of calibrations and coordinate transformations are required for accurate geolocation of each laser spot on the ground. In this paper, the authors review in-flight calibration maneuvers, post-mission data calibration and systematic bias determination procedures, as well as precision and accuracy measurement using internal validation and validation against third party data sets. The degree to which we are able to confidently model and verify these error sources and predict the accuracy of the released LVIS data has a direct impact on its utility and value in scientific studies. As such, much of our post-flight data processing effort is focused on the calibration, precise geolocation, and verification of these LVIS data sets.
