In order to understand the adaptation of vernix caseosa (VC) to the new environment after birth, temperature-dependent changes in VC features were studied. Our results indicate that VC adapts to the fundamental change from intrauterine to postnatal environment. The lipid ordering of VC increases after birth and thereby the period of sustained water release from VC is prolonged.
