Ground Improvement with Gravel Compaction Piles at the Rear of New Port : Case Studies and Analyses

Vibro gravel compacted pile (GCP) method is one of the ground improvement techniques by a vibro compaction. It employs a vibro compaction in vertical direction with crushed stone to build up stone pile foundation in order to ensure the stability of soft ground. Although GCP method has been used for a long in geotechnical engineering division, it is hard to find a study which was conducted in the reliable In-Situ condition. Most studies were based on laboratory tests including model tests. These model tests can provide standard and ideal behaviors, however, the specific status which can occur in the ground can not be covered by these tests efficiently. In this study, a series of trial constructions were performed to evaluate the effect of GCP method on the improvement of soft ground, especially in railroad construction site. In addition, series of numerical analyses with the two dimensional finite element methods were performed to verify the effect of various design factors on the behavior of improved ground. These analyses focus on the estimation of parameters based on the back analysis techniques.
