DAM SAFETY DATA ENTRY TOOL (DSDET): MAKING THE MOST OF ALL THIS DAM INFORMATION

The State of Colorado has a database of pertinent information for over 2,900 dams. Of these dams, 1,930 dams fall under the jurisdiction and purview of the Colorado Safety of Dams Program and are inspected and evaluated on a periodic basis. This office also performs on average 45 technical reviews of design and construction documents for new dams and modifications to existing dams and conducts over 150 construction inspections annually. The program staff consists of 14 dam safety engineers spread across the State in ten offices. In order to monitor the performance and effectiveness of the program, the Dam Safety Data Entry Tool (DSDET) was created. DSDET is a Microsoft ACCESS-based, interactive, administrative, and data-view tool. The DSDET application provides data-viewing as well as editing functionality. The Dam Safety Data Entry Tool includes the ability to: 1. Display administrative data, including pertinent dam information, staffing workload distribution, dam safety inspection histories, restrictions, corrective actions, and design review and construction information. 2. Monitor EAP's and dam safety inspection frequency. 3. Export data (seamlessly) to the National Inventory of Dams database. DSDET also has the following powerful "tools": 4. Tools for rapid searching and sorting of specific dam information and/or design review and construction projects. 5. Tools to create and edit dam structure information, including general structure information, restrictions and corrective actions. 6. Tools to create and edit the electronic version of our Engineer's Inspection Report, allowing for the preparation of reports created "in the field" to be uploaded into the statewide database. 7. Tools to create and edit design review and construction logs. Potential future enhancements to the DSDET may include the following features: 8. Monitoring dam security attributes, threats and vulnerability. 9. Migrating construction drawings currently scanned into the State's document imaging system. 10. Incorporating digital inspection photos.
