To describe the reaction of a new barley variety on different malting conditions a single EBC standard micro malting is not enough. The use of statistical software to design scientific trials with the opportunity to calculate a model and forecast the behaviour of a variety on different conditions is an instrument to get maximum information with a manageable number of trials. It allows maltsters to forecast the behaviour of varieties on the change of the three malting parameters vegetation time, water content and vegetation temperature and therefore to optimise malt quality and malting costs according to the individual malting conditions.
