Hazard Evaluation for Oxidation of Cyclic Ethers

Ethers are widely used as solvent for synthesis reaction, however, they are known as hazardouschemicals that have low flash point and may form peroxide under certain condition. In this study, theoxidative reactivity of cyclic ethers was evaluated by thermal analysis. We carried out the measurementas acceleration test using a high pressure vessel. This oxidation was monitored by DSC.Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 1,3-dioxolane were thermally oxidized at 40oC under high oxygen pressure(2MPa). The result of DSC measurement of THF with no stabilizer showed DSC curve was different byexposure time. It was found that this method can be used for the evaluation for oxidation. And DSCmeasurement is used for the determination of ether peroxides and it was faster and simpler thanpotassium iodine titration.
