Selection of Devices for SIS Use

While manufacturers are beginning to provide more field devices (sensors & valves), which are certified for use in safety instrumented systems, these devices are relatively limited in their range of application and technologies. For many applications, end-users in the chemical sector must rely heavily upon prior-use experience for selection of devices for safety instrumented systems. This paper discusses the methods being put into place by Lyondell Chemical Company to determine the suitability of field devices used as instrumented protective system components.
