Modeling and Simulation (M&S) techniques have been employed for many years in aneffort to mitigate some of the costs of Live Fire ship shock testing. As computationaltechnology improves, models of ships and other systems continue to become moreaccurate and able to provide viable estimates of physical reality. Finite Element Analysis(FEA) is the most widely used and accepted method of predicting a ship's response to anunderwater explosion (UNDEX.) The drawback of FEA is that even with currenttechnology, an accurate FEA may take many days to execute a single run.The Shock And Response Algorithm (SARA,) a portion of the Measure Of TotalIntegrated System Survivability (MOTISS) program, uses first principle, first orderphysics to rapidly approximate ship response. SARA executes a single run on the order ofone hour, allowing for multiple runs to be made in the same time as a single FEA.This paper provides a cursory examination of the comparison of a single run of SARA toa single run of an FEA tool, USADyna. The model is a ship simulating box bargedesigned by the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey California. Comparisons aremade between velocities of particular points or nodes on the model.
