Compared with the conventional thyristor valve for the projects of ±500kV voltage level andbelow, the ±800kV UHVDC thyristor valve has higher requirements on its quality andreliability. It is necessary to do the specific study on the type test procedures for the valvesand thyristors.The paper introduced the characteristics of the SGCC UHVDC thyristor valves and itssemiconductor components. A summary of the engineering experience from the type testingof the thyristor valves for the conventional HVDC projects have been given out. For theuniqueness of the UHVDC thyristor valves, some key points have been pointed out and theoptimization suggestions are presented in this paper.
