A new burner has been developed which incorporates the Coanda principle for controlling fluidflow, mixing, and flame stability. This aerodynamic effect has created some unique burnerproperties including very low CO and NOx emissions. Most ultra low NOx burners producehigh CO emissions during cold furnace start-up, but this new design produces low CO even in acold furnace. The new burner, called the COOLSTAR HALOTM burner, produces very low NOxemissions - single digit for most typical operating conditions. The new burner also has a widerturndown than typical ultra low NOx burners (up to 10:1), due to the advanced mixing. Itincorporates fuel staging, air/fuel ratio control, and internal flue gas recirculation. The Coandaprinciple used in this design is more efficient at entraining furnace gases, compared to previousdesigns. This new design minimizes interactions between adjacent flames, which have been aproblem with previous generations of ultra low NOx burners. The heat flux profile in thefurnace tends to be more uniform than those produced by other types of ultra low NOx burners. The burner can be used in natural draft or forced draft applications, in either low or hightemperature heaters and furnaces.
