This paper presents a comparison study of torque outputs of an in-wheel switched reluctance motor (SRM) with different winding configurations. Both of the short pitched and fully pitched winding configurations are analyzed by using 2D finite element method. Torque profiles and ripple ratios, which are the most important parameters of in-wheel propulsion motors in electric vehicle (EV) applications, are compared for different current levels. It is observed that, with fully pitched winding configuration, torque output is higher than the short pitched winding configuration. However, increasing torque ripple ratio makes this configuration inconvenient for in-wheel EV applications.
