THE SAFE ROAD SYSTEM PROCESS - FOR ACHIEVING ROAD SAFETY CONSISTENT WITH TOWARDS ZERO AND THE DECADE OF ACTION

In 2007, the evolution of a more effective and practical approach for achieving road safety started to evolve as a substantial attempt was made to implement the Safe System Approach on the highest value road project of the day in Western Australia. It complemented established road safety processes by better identifying and prioritising the road safety risks and guiding a more effective and holistic mitigation strategy. The success led to the application of the approach on further projects and the approach was taken to the world. When demonstrated to the ASANRA Traffic Safety Committee in Zimbabwe in 2013 (alongside the Road Safety Audit and Inspection processes), it was considered to be highly applicable to the context, easier to apply and more effective. Eight years of experience have now culminated in the Safe Road System Process (SRSP) process. This paper explains the SRSP process and guides its application.
