The Roads Department of the Ministry of Public Works, has successfully developed over the last decade a program paving rural roads under traffic at low cost (approximately $ US / 150,000 km), called "Caminos Básico 5000". The Region de los Lagos, has a very rainy weather (about 2,000 mm / year). This implies that the cost associated with storm water drainage is high relative to paviment and can easily reach top $ / km 80,000, if using traditional solutions for rainwater drainage. For this purpose this paper describes the solutions adopted, which are inexpensive and can reach lower costs by approximately 30%. These innovations are mainly based on: - Use masonry trenches, ditches and general longitudinal drainage. - Using HDPE mesh for channel protection - Use of HDPE pipes for sewers - pre fabricated concrete elements - Use of biodegradable mesh for slope protection - Replacement of concrete curbs with not biodegradable mesh with added lawn. Also, in the design stage, a finished cadastral of existing culverts, which is mounted on existing aerial photographs is incorporated, which greatly reduces the design time and increases future work.
