A Support System of Operation Planning for a Parallel Kinematic Machine Tool

In aerospace, automotive and die/mold industries, high speed ball-end milling is expected to realize efficient machining of sculptured surfaces. Parallel kinematic machine tools have advantages for high productive ball-end- milling. The commercial machine tool "COSMO CENTER PM-600" used in this study has six telescoping struts which control the location and posture of the spindle unit. In this study, the strut motion during a cutting operation is simulated to support operation planning. External forces acting on each strut are estimated by solving the kinematic model. The feasibility of the support system is validated by comparing servo motor torque.
