This paper compares the diamond machining of free-form surfaces by raster milling and Slow-Tool-Servo (STS) machining. With both processes toroidal surfaces with radii of curvature of 600 mm and 800 mm or 100 mm and 800 mm have been machined. As workpiece materials five relevant materials for optical mould making and direct fabrication of optics have been selected. To evaluate both manufacturing methods the machined surfaces are characterized according to roughness and form accuracy by white light interferometry and atomic force microscopy.
