To clarify the cause of wide scattering in life of natural monocrystalline diamond cutting tools, the correlation was investigated between the types and amounts of various defects in raw diamonds regarding nitrogen impurity evaluated by infrared absorption (IRA) and the wear and chipping resistances. As a result, diamonds including less total amount of impurity show larger wear resistance and that with larger amount of B2 center, which is a platelet type defect, show larger chipping resistance. This suggests that the IRA inspection can be a useful method for qualification of raw diamond for highly durable cutting tools.
