Mechanochemical synthesis of yttria and alumina stabilized zirconia nanopowders has been carried out. Products have been characterized in their ability to sinter in dense material at low temperature with the retention of grain size in submicron range. Based on the idea of the achievement of mechanochemical equilibrium where processes of comminution and aggregation or recrystallization counterbalance each other two step mechanical treatment procedure (synthesis and then deaggregation) has been proposed. The resulting (7Y) and (3Y20A)-ZrO2 nanopowders being uniaxially pressed at 200-400 MPa sinter into nearly full dense ceramics at 1250°C.
