Mineral storage of CO_2 upon interaction of carbon dioxide, either supercritical or aqueous, with basic and ultrabasic rocks, has been studied experimentally at both high temperatures (> 400°C, P > 1000 bar) and lower temperatures (90°C, P = 280 bar). In the first case, large amounts of carbonatation are obtained within hours through a coupling between serpentinization and carbonatation. In the second case, zoned carbonate layers of about ten microns are deposited within few weeks by a dissolution/precipitation mechanism. High salinities and serpentinization reactions are shown to be positive factors of the carbonatation process.
