Sorption enhanced steam methane reforming (SESMR) has been evaluated as an alternative to steam methane reforming (SMR) for the production of hydrogen with CO_2 management by means of thermodynamic analysis, kinetic measurements, reactor modelling and process simulation. It was found that the working capacity and efficiency of the process is very dependent on the properties of the CO_2 acceptor. Materials with favourable CO_2 equilibrium and fast kinetics are required. Hydrogen production by SESMR has a competitive thermal efficiency with SMR, while having a simpler process layout.
