Dynamic response analyses were performed to evaluate potential earthquake-induced deformations and their impact on the seismic stability of a 56-m-high composite dam located in New Zealand. The structure is comprised of a 364-m-long concrete section and a 430-m-long zoned earth embankment. The concrete dam is founded on unweathered to slightly weathered greywacke. The earth dam is founded on Tertiary deposits of mudstone, claystone, and sandstone with coal beds. An active fault, the Waitangi fault, crosses the footprint of the dam. The stability of the embankment dam under earthquake shaking was evaluated using the Seed-Lee-Idriss procedure and fully non-linear dynamic response analyses with the finite difference code FLAC. The calculated deformations from Newmark type analyses were found to be in good agreement with the deformations calculated using FLAC.
