An intake structure was constructed adjacent to a homogeneous sand fill embankment retaining over 6 square miles of water in south Florida. A joint venture between Black & Veatch Corporation and Zachry Construction Corporation was contracted to design and build the structure. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction of the intake structure adjacent to a raised, homogeneous, sand-fill embankment. Design issues included global stability, seepage, piping, buoyancy, and structural racking. An instrumentation system including vibrating wire strain gauges and piezometers, chain exten-someters, and inclinometers was implemented to monitor the dam for any signs of distress. Strain gauges and vibrating wire piezometers data were collected continuously during construction using a remote data acquisition system. Enhancements were made to the dam to improve the overall stability, including permanent sheet pile walls and a new toe drain. This presentation reviews the potential dam failure modes, structure design, and construction.
