As demand for air travel continues to grow rapidly, new concepts in air traffic management are being explored to accommodate this growth. These tools and technologies seek to manage the increased traffic density in a way that maintains and improves on existing high levels of safety and minimises delays both en route and on the ground. By minimising delays and diversions from direct routes, these innovative approaches to air traffic management have the potential to reduce fuel consumption and hence contribute to efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide. This discussion paper explores the scope for applying emerging innovative air transport management concepts and tools to the mitigation of a wider range of environmental impacts from aviation, with a particular focus on contributions to climate change.
