CHARACTERIZATION OF LOCAL ASIAN OLD CORRUGATED CONTAINER (LOCC) PULP

The OCC is a generic term, so it differs from country to country or even region to region. Recycled paper properties are strongly influenced by its life cycle. Therefore, there is a merit in generation of a benchmark data on OCC furnish components, where it could assist the papermakers in their day to day struggle in maintaining their end product quality. Local old corrugated container (LOCC) was collected, then its fiber characteristics and papermaking potential was compared with European and North american OCCs. It was found that LOCC contains less unbleached softwood Kraft pulp, less long fiber, but high percentage of starch and high percentage of contaminants including insoluble ash content as compared to AOCC. EOCC was more similar to LOCC than AOCC if the comparison is made on fiber properties or the furnish components. LOCC required less energy for refining, was weaker in strength, but produced smoother surface. EOCc behavior in terms of refining or paper properties was more similar to LOCC, however, it was slightly weaker than LOCC.
