A Survey of Applications of Information Technology in the Operation of Construction Related Organizations in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area

Information technology plays an important role in the construction industry.Advances in microcomputers have allowed construction companies to streamline processes,which have resulted in time savings and increased profits.Tasks such as estimating,accounting,document control,and planning and scheduling have benefited by the availability of new and more powerful hardware and software.It is important for the next generation of construction professionals to have the knowledge necessary to take advantage of the newer and more powerful computer applications.This knowledge can be gained either by formal education in a construction related academic program or in continued education courses.This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among companies that are involved in any of the many areas of the construction industry (residential,commercial,civil,mechanical,and electrical,etc.) in the Atlanta metropolitan area.These companies may be involved in design,construction or both and may represent both sides of the client customer relationship (owners and contractors).The purpose of the survey was to assess what types of computer applications are most used in today's construction industry.By identifying trends of what applications are used we can prepare future construction professionals to take advantage of available technologies by providing training targeted at the most used applications in the industry.
