The variability of nearshore bar responses to hydrodynamic conditions is investigated using a 2DH process-based model. Two hydrodynamic conditions were consecutively applied to an initially longshore uniform double barred profile, mimicking an up-state transition with four different transition moments. The bathymetrical evolution is analysed on the extent of adapting towards a state that relates to the up-state condition. It was found that the earlier the transition moment, the better the bars adjust their length scales to the length scales related to the up-state condition. The computed results show merging behaviour and variations in length scales that compare well with field observations.
