Strong vibrations called silo-quaking and loud noise emissions called silo-honkingoccur during discharge of some bulk solids from thin-walled metal silos. These phenomenaresult, among others, from the slip-stick behavior of the bulk solids. Silo-quaking can bereduced by installing discharge pipes reducing the pressures in the flow regime. Thesedischarge pipes also prevent silo-honking. Silo-honking can also be reduced by installing astructured surface in the cylindrical wall and thus creating shear zone along the wallpreventing strongly intermittent flow from slip-stick. Silo-quaking also need to be consideredwith respect to the structural design of the silo and the foundation loads.
