Applications of Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) - An Overview

Cement kiln dust (CKD) is a waste generated from the manufacture of Portland cement. It is a powder chiefly composed of oxidized, anhydrous, micron-sized particles collected from electrostatic precipitators during the high temperature production of clinker. Cement kiln dust's chemical composition and reactive properties make it useful for a number of different applications. Cement kiln dust generally has a specific gravity around 2.84 and a maximum dry density of 1,520 kg/m~3 . The maximum particle size of cement kiln dust is 0.300 mm. The use of cement kiln dust should be taken on a case-by-case basis, as different qualities of the material are useful for different types of stabilization projects. Fresh dry cement kiln dust often has a very fine texture that makes it hard to handle, but has a higher free lime content. Stockpiled cement kiln dust is better to deal with for use as a construction fill in the transportation industry. The beneficial uses of CKD are in soil stabilization, waste stabilization/solidification, Portland cement replacement, asphalt pavement, flowable fill, lightweight aggregate , and construction fill. This paper presents properties of cement kiln dust (CKD), recycling options, and an overview of the research published on the uses of CKD in cement paste/mortar/concrete, controlled low-strength materials, asphalt pavement, soil stabilizer. Leachate analysis is also presented here.
