The Boeing Global Mobility Systems Test & Evaluation (T&E) Simulation, Development Integration Laboratories (SDIL) in Long Beach, California provides a World Class laboratory test environment for the C-17 Program. The SDIL continuously improves C-17 capabilities to support Product Definition, Product Evaluation, Product Production, and Product Support. The key test facilities are Avionics Integration Area (AIA), Avionics Integration Support Facility (AISF), Flight Control System Simulator (FCSS), Flight Hardware Simulator (FHS), and Re-Configurable Desktop Simulator's (RDS).The primary purpose of the AIA is to integrate and test the C-17 Avionics prior to flight test and squadron retrofit. The AIA is mainly used for subsystem development test and subsystem integration tests.AISF is designed to provide state-of-the-art software support capability for the C-17 Operational Flight Programs (OFPs) development, qualification, segment tests and simulated systems test to support depot OFP maintenance. AISF consists of three integrated areas: Central Computing Facility, Integration Test Facility, and System Test Facility.The FCSS provides a high fidelity test facility for C-17 flight control and hydraulic systems. FCSS is used for open-loop/closed loop tests, hydraulic subsystem tests, Flight Control System (FCS) failure evaluation, and support future C-17 FCS enhancement.The FHS provides a high fidelity, pilot-in-the-loop, fixed based simulation with a visual system. FHS supports flight control system integration tests, system level tests, man-in-the-loop evaluation, mission planning, flight readiness, and flight crew familiarization.The RDS provides a pilot-in-the-loop, real-time simulation environment with rapid prototyping capability to support aircraft display evaluation. The RDS objectives are to support current high fidelity flight simulation technology with a more portable, low cost platform that can be used for rapid avionics prototyping, pilot training, and multi-participant, distributed simulation.The SDIL continuously improves C-17 capabilities to support Product Definition, Product Evaluation, Product Production, and Product Support. All the simulation facilities provide key sub-system integration testing and system level testing capabilities, and they all play critical testing roles before the actual aircraft flight test. These simulators have been supporting the C-17 Program, a Malcolm Baldrige National Award Winner, since 1990.
