摘要

Coal deposits are widely present in many locations in the Barito Basin in South Kalimantan, Indonesia (Figure 1). Most of the coals have been mined since the Dutch colonialism. The coal resources are estimated to amount to 2,7 billion tonnes. Coal petrology in terms of type and rank can contribute to an understanding of the nature and aids in determining its utilisation potential. Unfortunately, there is no data of petrographic composition of the Barito coals. Data on the chemistry of some of the coals have been published. The chemistry data, however, are useful particularly to determine rank of the coals, because there is a good correlation between the proximate analyses and the rank. Geological setting of the studied area affects quality (with reference to type and rank) of the coals, especially the stratigraphic and overburden thickness aspect.
