Adsorption Properties of Mesoporous Pitch-Based Carbons

This presentation provides a brief overview of the existing strategies for the synthesis of pitch-based carbons with uniformand ordered mesopores with special emphasis on their adsorption properties and characterization. It is shown that imprintingand templating methods can be employed to design and tailor mesoporosity in carbons by using silica colloids, colloidalsilica crystals and ordered mesoporous silicas as pore-forming agents. Graphitization of pitch-based mesoporous carbons athigh temperatures under neutral atmosphere affords graphitized mesoporous carbons with high surface area and controlledporosity for electrochemical applications such as batteries, capacitors and so on. Adsorption properties such as specificsurface area, pore volume, pore size and pore connectivity can be easily tuned by selecting silica colloids or colloidal crystalsof desired size as well as by adjusting synthesis conditions and post-synthesis treatment.
