The potential of carbon cryogel microspheres (CC microspheres) with controlled porous structure for adsorption of phenoland reactive dye (Black 5) from aqueous solutions was studied. The adsorption experiments for a commercial activatedcarbon were also conducted and compared. CC microspheres with various mesoporosity could be produced by altering theamount of basic catalyst used in the sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde. In the adsorption of phenol,the activated carbon showed much higher adsorption amount compared to CC microspheres. Amounts of adsorbed phenol onCC microspheres were almost same irrespective of the size of mesopores. On the other hand, the amounts of adsorbed black 5on CC microspheres were larger than that on activated carbon. The CC microspheres showed that the amount of adsorbedblack 5 increased with the increase in the size of mesopores. It was confirmed that the CC microspheres with large mesoporesize and volume are useful adsorbents for removal of bulky adsorbates from wastewater.
