Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.(KHNP), which operates all the nuclear power plants in Korea, isdeveloping a new dry storage cask to store twenty four spent fuel assemblies generated from pressurized waterreactors for at-reactor or away-from-reactor interim storage facility in Korea. The dry storage cask is designed andevaluated according to the requirements of the IAEA, the US NRC and the Korean regulations for the dry spentfuel storage system. It provides confinement, radiation shielding, structural integrity, subcritical control andpassive heat removal for normal and accident conditions. The dry storage cask consists of a dual purpose canisterproviding a confinement boundary for the PWR spent fuel, and a storage overpack providing a structural andradiological boundary for long-term storage of the canister placed inside it. The overpack is constructed by acombination of steel and concrete, and is equipped with penetrating ducts near its lower and upper extremities topermit natural circulation of air to provide for the passive cooling of the canister and the contained spent fuelassemblies. This paper describes development status, description, design criteria, evaluation and demonstrationtests of the dry storage cask.
