We present a framework for the integratedanalysis of the textual and prosodic characteristicsof information structure in theSwitchboard corpus of conversational English.Information structure describes theavailability, organisation and salience ofentities in a discourse model. We presentstandards for the annotation of informationstatus (old, mediated and new), andgive guidelines for annotating informationstructure, I.e. theme/rheme and background/kontrast. We show that informationstructure in English can only be analysedconcurrently with prosodic prominenceand phrasing. This annotation, usingstand-off XML in NXT, can help establishstandards for the annotation of informationstructure in discourse.
