A Unified Representation for Morphological, Syntactic, Semantic, andReferential Annotations

This paper reports on the SYN-RA(SYNtax-based Reference Annotation)project, an on-going project of annotatingGerman newspaper texts with referentialrelations. The project has developed an inventoryof anaphoric and coreference relationsfor German in the context of a unified,XML-based annotation scheme forcombining morphological, syntactic, semantic,and anaphoric information. Thepaper discusses how this unified annotationscheme relates to other formats currentlydiscussed in the literature, in particularthe annotation graph model of Birdand Liberman (2001) and the pie-in-theskyscheme for semantic annotation.
