A Software Tool for Teaching Reading Based on Text-to-Speech Letter-to-Phoneme Rules

Native speakers of English who are goodreaders can “sound out” words or namesfrom printed text, even if they have neverseen them before, although they may notbe conscious of the strategies they use.No tools are available today that can conveythat knowledge to learners, showingthem the rules that apply in English text.We have adapted the letter-to-phonemecomponent of a text-to-speech synthesizerto a web-based software system that canteach word decoding to non-native speakersof English, English-speaking children,and adult learners.
