I describe steps toward “deep lexical acquisition”based on na?ve theories, motivatedby modern results of developmentalpsychology. I argue that today’s machinelearning paradigm is inappropriate to takethese steps. Instead we must develop computationalaccounts of na?ve theory representations, mechanisms of theory acquisition, and the mapping of na?ve theories tolexicalizable concepts. This will enableour theories to describe the flexibility ofthe human conceptual apparatus.
