Photovoltaic Lighting the Way: Case Study of Nepal

Electricity, is key to economic development and a basic need – however, in the rural areas of Nepal it is yet a luxury item. Only 40% of the total population have access to electricity – 33 percent from national grid and 7 percent from alternative energy. Photovoltaic has enhanced the life of rural users, economically and socially, providing access to light, media and opportunity for income generating activities. Government and donors have supported through subsidy measures and soft loans. However, low purchasing capacity of the population remains a foreboding challenge in the promotion of photovoltaic. This paper highlights a financing methodology for increasing affordability of the poor. It is unique in its approach with skill development and market creation, thus enabling loan repayment for even the poorest of the poor. It is based upon field experiences from Baglung, a remote district in the country.
