In Crailsheim (Germany) a new solar assisted district heating system is being built to supply approximately 260 accommodation units (mainly in one-family houses) with heat. The solar fraction based on the total heat demand will be 50 %. In the final state ca 7 325 m2 of solar thermal collectors will be installed on top of diverse buildings and on a noise protection wall. The long term heat store will consist of a duct heat store (volume: 40 500 m3), a buffer store (450 m3) and a heat pump. A buffer store (100 m3) has already been built and different fields of solar thermal collectors have been mounted on top of a gymnasium, of a school and on top of a multi-family house (altogether 1 150 m2 aperture). The system was put in operation in December 2004.
