Carbodiimide-modified isocyanates are a staple raw material in the CASE polyurethane market. With recent manufacturing advances, BASF has developed a new, carbodiimidemodified isocyanate to be sold under the trade name LUPRANATE? 5143 Isocyanate. Compared to other BASF isocyanates, the LUPRANATE 5143 Isocyanate may provide improvements in low temperature stability, shelf life, clarity, and certain physical properties. Monomeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MMDI) is reacted to yield a carbodiimidemodified isocyanate with a traditional 29.2 % Free-NCO. The LUPRANATE 5143 Isocyanate is a solvent-free, light yellow liquid, with a recommended storage temperature between 68°F and 86°F (20 – 30°C). The physical properties of the LUPRANATE 5143 Isocyanate are compared with other carbodiimide-modified isocyanates. This includes the current family of BASF carbodiimide-modified isocyanates (LUPRANATE MM103, LUPRANATE 219, LUPRANATE 218, and LUPRANATE 81 isocyanate). A competitive product is also compared. The first experimental section investigates the low temperature stability of the neat isocyanates. The second experimental section involves processing the carbodiimideisocyanates into prepolymers. The temperature stability of the prepolymers is monitored. For the third section, flexible and rigid elastomers are formulated from the family of carbodiimidemodified isocyanates. The basic physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, glass transition, and durometer hardness are reported. The reactivity profiles of the different carbodiimide-modified isocyanates are also compared.
