Centrifugally cast high-nickel alloys for use in the petrochemical industry rely on the formation of a dense, adherent oxide layer to protect them from carbon penetration and subsequent degradation at high temperatures. Present applications are based on the formation of a chromia layer for such purposes. A new S+C developmental alloy 60 HT, relies on the formation of a dense, adherent alumina layer that not only offers protection against oxidation and carburization under the same operating conditions, but also extends the maximum operating temperature to beyond 1150°C, due to the extreme high temperature stability of the alumina layer.
