Ba(Zr_(0.85)Y_(0.15))O_(3-δ) (BZY) has been synthesized by co-precipitation method. Powder x-ray diffraction patterns confirmed phase pure material formation at 1100°C. The average particle size of the 1100°C calcined powder was found to be -1μm. The nature of the powder was found to be softly agglomerated. Shrinkage behaviour of powder compacts has been studied. Effect of addition of different amounts of ZnO on the shrinkage behaviour and sintered density of BZY has also been studied. It was observed that addition of ZnO enhanced sintering, sintered density of more than 95 % TD was achieved by sintering at 1400°C. Study of sintering kinetics of powder compacts with 1 wt % ZnO and without ZnO has been carried out. Initial results show that different sintering mechanisms operate in these two materials. This is also supported by microstructural studies.
