Hydrophobic Ion Pairing as a Strategy for Achieving Sustained Release of Beta- Blockers from SprayDried Polymeric Microspheres

Three beta-blockers (atenolol, alprenolol andmetoprolol) were encapsulated within polymericmicrospheres by spray drying. However, in vitrodrug release was immediate rather than sustained,attributable to the surface active nature of the betablockersin question. Hydrophobic ion pairing wassuccessfully employed to retard drug release over a7-day period.
