A novel approach of TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) measurement in wireless positioning technique is presented. Time coordinate of correlation peak of received PN sequence is expressed as a function of time origin of local PN sequence in BTS. TDOA of PN sequence is derived from measurements of each BTS. Thus, no RTT (round trip time) is required any more. BTS (Base Transceiver Stations) measure only arrival time of PN sequence emitted by MT (mobile terminal). This method has eliminated the receiver in MT since no signals make round trip. Guided by the proposed approach, a MT has been developed. Experimental results show that the size, cost and power consumption of MT has been reduced considerably while position resolution has been raised to the level of sub meters at a range of 1000 meters.
