Recently, many numerical and experimental studies have been carried out on the effectiveness of Magnetorheological (MR) damper in reducing structural responses of wind, wave and earthquake. However, the research on the ice-induced platform vibrations is quite limited. This paper studies an energy dissipation method for structural response reduction of jacket platforms. The application of one kind of MR fluid damper to vibration control was studied both theoretically and experimentally. An experiment research program has been performed to investigate performance of the MR. A MR attached with a dynamic vibration amplified device was also designed and manufactured. Extensive test sequences were conducted to examine the effectiveness of the MR. Preliminary results show that the overall performance of MR damper is satisfied.
