This paper presents a comprehensive review on the cracks of hydraulic turbine runner by analyzing the running conditions of 10 Francis turbine in China, including the places where the cracks happened, the factors which can influence the generation and evolution of cracks, the methods which can measure the cracks, the simulation approaches which can simulate the stress on the runner and decide where the cracks can be happened easily and the analysis on the nature frequencies of the runner in the water considering of the fluid-structure coupling interaction theorem. By the contrast of the advantages and limitations of methods, some factors, which affect the stability and expansion of cracks on the units, are summarized. At last, improving measures are put forward.
