The paper describes the design and implementation of a new and high performance VXI signal source module used at VXI Automatic Test System. The module adopts DDS technique as the core of the system to get stable and frequency/phase-agile sine and square signals. And using the square signal as clock to trigger the FPGA to produce other waveform such as triangle, ramp, and arbitrary waveforms etc, and it also implements functions of amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, and frequency sweep. The module uses two Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for a flexible topology. One is programmed to a VXI-interface circuit, and the other is programmed to the DDS circuit and the control circuit. There is advantage to the module’s integration. The paper describes the block diagram of the module including a description of the timing, data and logic structure, control words definition, FPGA programming highlights, and general module specifications.
