The four-ball wear tests indicated, an organic borate ester and a zinc dialkyl dithiocarbamate(ZnDDC) are antiwear synergistic both in lubricating oil and grease. Organic borate ester does not containany corrosive element, and ZnDDC itself is a metal deactivator and corrosion inhibitor, so the combinationof borate ester and ZnDDC can be utilized to develop low corrosive or non-corrosive antiwear lubricatingoil and grease. The rubbing surface was analyzed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The result revealed thatthe nitrogen-containing borate ester could produce boron nitride (BN) with a lamellar structuretribochemically under boundary lubrication, which plays a key role in the antiwear mechanism.
