This paper outlines a general guideline for selecting techniques required for processequipment degradation monitoring and options available for documenting generated data.The guideline covers five key stages including preliminary assessment for risk basedinspection (RBI), inspection and monitoring techniques, data gathering and evaluation,documentation of generated data and the required periodic data assessment. Applicationof the generated data for planning and managing risk based inspection strategies andprediction of remaining life are also discussed.The level of equipment degradation is defined by type and severity, depending ondegradation mechanism which may be uniform corrosion, localized corrosion, erosion,hydrogen damage, environmental or mechanical cracking, metallurgical changes andmaterial embrittlement. A number of system variables which impact equipmentdegradation are also discussed including quality of processed fluid, process severity,temperature, pressure differential across systems, operating pressure, chemical treatmentpractices, concentration of corrosive components, metallurgy, plant configuration andoperating practices.
