ATTENUATION OF TRANSIENT VIBRATIONS USING A TUNED VIBRATIONABSORBER

Tuned vibration absorbers (TVAs) are often used to attenuate relatively narrow band periodicstructural vibrations. However, the TVAs ability to attenuate transient vibrations, I.e. shockresponses, has not been explored. In this paper, the development of a unique TVA that isapplicable to transient vibrations is discussed. Two important findings are reported: 1) asignificant reduction in transient narrow band vibration energy can be achieved by tuning a TVAto a single structural mode, and 2) broadband vibration attenuation is possible if multiple TVAsare tuned to various structural modes. To support these findings, laboratory and analyticalresults pertaining to the effectiveness of TVAs in reducing transient vibrations on a simplestructure are presented. Finally, the robustness of applying this type of TVA to complexaerospace structures is discussed.
